A strictly subjective list of things to enjoy while in town. The best Budapest restaurants, cafés, bars, and nightclubs. My very own top picks. Click on the venue's name to be taken to its website.


Fine Dining:

Costes: the only Michelin star restaurant in town, simply amazing food, matching the highest international standards, unrivalled professional service, tasteful decor, light music, silver tableware

Mokka: great ambiance, pleasant chillout music, creative and highly talented chef, large variety of exotic and European fusion gourmet dishes.

Spoon: best location in town, on a boat over the Danube, impressive design, great decor and spacious rooms, good food and service, fantastic view and trendy cosmopolitan crowd.

Déryné: wonderful, renewed cafe and restaurant on the Buda side. The biggest hit at the moment, so reservation well in advance will be needed. Perfect for a great meal with great style and to watch people.

Mini: next door to Déryné, on the Buda side. Local top spot with well-off business people. Great food bistro style.

Baraka: probably the best food in town, expatriate owned and friendly, world class stylish design, impeccable service. Don't expect a big crowd though, more intimate.

Manna Lounge
: open air during Summer, very stylish design, live jazz occassionally, great wine list.

Cyrano:
extremly stylish ambiance, high class crowd, gourmet and fusion food.

Onyx: fantastic decor, fantastic gourmet food, near the Kempinski hotel.

Symbol: a brand new, innovative establishment housing an Italian fusion restaurant, a stylish lounge cafe, and other interesting venues. A bit off the centre.


Lunch in laid-back settings:

Cafe Pierrot: fantastic little restaurant in the Buda castle, great jazz pianist, light salads and grills, easy going staff.

Goa
: exotic Asian food, beautifully presented, stylish, laid-back ambiance, open-air terrace to Andrassy boulevard during the Summer.

Arcade
: a definite hot spot favoured by local rich business people, best restaurant on the Buda side, excellent wine list, impeccable gourmet dishes.

Cafe Kör
: locals' tip and favoured by expatriates, young and friendly waiters, reasonable prices.


Café / Coffee Shop / Bistro:


Café Gerlóczy: won the best coffee shop in 2007 award, wonderfully laid-back, friendly staff, favoured with expat regulars, fantastic food 

Café Centrál: a coffee shop with the longest traditions, a bohemian past, and elegant present

Café New York: located on the ground floor of Boscolo New York Palace luxury hotel, splendid, super exclusive decor, long history

Leroy MOM Park: currently the most stylish, hip venue for trendy young professionals and well-off locals, large bar area and small dance floor, a place to see and to be seen, gorgeous, elegant ladies and men in Armani, lot's of English speakers

Mini: small restaurant/bar on the Buda side, the newest hit and hot spot with local well-off business people and media professionals. A real insiders' tip. Professional DJ, upmarket and stylish ambiance.

Creol
:
small New York style bar next to the Four Seasons, highly popular with upmarket, well dressed nouveau rich crowd and business people, typical pick-up place for expatriates, with nicely presented, pleasant, more mature ladies, and funky music.

White Angel: large, new, trendy electronic, house and progressive venue, flooded with younger girls.

Club Play: large, new, trendy electronic, house and progressive venue, packed with girls and locals.

Jam Pub: Mammut shopping mall basement, busy dance floor, retro music, mixed, older crowd, plently of tourists.

Morrisson's 2: a low key, interesting venue, more for the youngsters, with a groovy, arty and underground crowd. Lot's of English speakers. Dance floors on three levels and heated courtyard.
